Coatepeque Lake


Located in the department of Santa Ana, Lake Coatepeque was formed in the crater of a volcano. It is located at an altitude of 745 meters above sea level. The surface of the lake is 25.3 km² and has a maximum depth of 115 meters. The periphery of the lake is adorned with beautiful wooded hills, with a single entrance. To access Lake Coatepeque visitors have to quickly cross the village of El Congo.

Lake Coatepeque is the third largest Lake in El Salvador, after Lake Ilopango and Lake Güija. However, in terms of tourism, Lake Coatepeque is the one that receives the greatest atention.

It is located 70 km from the capital, San Salvador. This natural tourist destination is a perfect option to vacation, relax and enjoy water sports. It has an ideal environment to practice ecotourism, bird watching, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, diving and tour the lake by kayak, boat or jet ski.

On the route to the Lake, there are many viewpoints and restaurants with a panoramic view of Lake Coatepeque. It also has an excellent panoramic view of the Santa Ana volcano and the green hill.

The lake has an island, the island of Teopán. To get to this island, there is a ferry installed. This is at the closest point between the shore of the lake and the island. In addition, it has a couple of small peninsulas, popularly known as Los Anteojos. Name acquired by the figure they form when observed from a distance.
